Nature as a tool helps your garden through companion planting. Beans/squash, tomatoes/basil, tomatoes/onions, are all classic examples and easy to plan into a home garden. Here's a short introduction. I've used the techniques; string beans growing on the cornstalks -- no staking needed; after the corn was harvested, the beans were still being gathered. I even have garlic (the "stinking rose") growing around my rose trees.
